Abelmoschus esculentus is the scientific name of Okra which is also called Okro in most African countries. Much fewer individuals know it as lady’s finger.

The nutritional content of Okra is high; It is a rich source of dietary fibers, protein, carbohydrates, beta carotenes, lutein and xanthin, folic acid or folates, vitamin K, Vitamin C, calcium, manganese, magnesium, iron and potassium.

But what link does Okra have with the treatment and prevention of certain forms of cancers; breast and prostate cancers inclusive?

Well there is an established fact that Okra seeds contain large concentration of LECTIN. They are a type of protein that can bind cell membranes. Many plants actually produce lectin for defense against pests, microorganisms and insects.

The lectin found in Okra as researchers show has SELECTIVE antitumor effect on BREAST CANCER CELLS.

Furthermore, underneath the skin of Okra pod is found that viscous substance called pectin which is tremendously effective in destroying HIGHLY METASTATIC melanoma (skin cancer) cells as shown by scientists.
Pectin is also known for its other health benefits including; to effectively delay the absorption of glucose and to normalize blood lipid levels.

From available scientific studies and anecdotal evidences (I personally witnessed some), okra not only prevents the development of prostate and breast cancers but actually and overwhelmingly too, destroys such malignant cells through the process known as apoptosis which is a physiological programmed selective cell death.

Consumption of Okra in various forms such as Okra soup, okra pod powder, okra pod water extract as well as topical application of fresh Okra paste (in case of external cancers) are adjunct therapies and are highly recommended to patients with such challenges.

However, before fully adopting this or any other health modality, it is wise to discuss it over with your personal health care provider.
